Faith of Abraham (Hebrews 11:8-10)

On Sunday in children's church we talked about Abraham and how he had faith.  Abraham's name when God first revealed himself was Abram.  He was a pagan idol worshiper.  When God revealed himself to Abram and God spoke, Abram listened, believed and obeyed.  God told him to leave where he grew up and start traveling to a place promised by God.  God made a promise that he would bless Abram and his children.  According to Hebrews 11:1 "Faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen".  Abraham had assurance that God would keep his promise and bless him in a land he could not yet see.  We learned and will learn more this Sunday that this blessing that Abraham was promised was not received in his lifetime (Hebrews 11:13-16).  This land promised to him and all who believe in Jesus (Gal.4, Rom.4) is a heavenly land which we all will be blessed to live in forever.

Discussion point:  What are promises that God makes to us that we can believe him for?  Check out these verses to help (John 3:16, John 10:27-29, Hebrews 13:5).

The following is our scripture memory verse for the month:

Ephesians 2:8-9

For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God — not by works, so that no one can boast.
